A TASTE cocktails Mezcal & Chartreuse Kit

The Recipes

First up, let’s look at how to make the drinks in the kit this month. I’ve chosen 2 particularly good recipes to feature both Green and Yellow chartreuse with the Del Maguey Vida Mezcal. One recipe uses green, one uses yellow.

I suggest you make just 1 cocktail of each recipe to taste it and see if you like it (you could even do half measures if you’re unsure) and if you’re not a fan of either, check our alternative recipes below for something more to your tastes.

You will need:

  • A Mezcal & Chartreuse kit, or the below ingredients
  • A Mixologist Equipment kit, or equivalent tools
  • Ice cubes
  • A grapefruit
  • 2-3 limes
  • A serrano pepper (optional)

Check out this video for a run-through of how to make them, or follow the recipes below.

All Betts Are Off

Created by Matt Lanning of The Bitter Bar in Boulder, Colorado to help ease customers into the taste of mezcal.

  • 30ml Del Maguey Vida Mezcal
  • 15ml Yellow Chartreuse
  • 15ml Dolin Blanc Vermouth
  • 2 dashes Fee Brother’s Grapefruit Bitters
  • Grapefruit peel twist to garnish

Half-fill a shaker or mixing glass with cubed ice, then add all the liquid ingredients and stir for 30-45 seconds. Fine-strain into a chilled glass. Twist the grapefruit peel over the drink.

The Last of the Oaxacans

A Mexican version of a classic Gin recipe called “The Last Word”, made with green chartreuse. The chilli pepper kick is optional!

  • 15ml Del Maguey Vida Mezcal
  • 15ml Green Chartreuse
  • 15ml Cartron Marasquin Liqueur
  • 15ml Fresh lime juice
  • (optional) Serrano pepper to garnish

Half-fill a shaker or mixing glass with cubed ice, then add all the ingredients except the pepper and stir for 30-45 seconds. Fine-strain into a chilled glass. Cut a notch in the pepper and rub it around the rim of the glass, then leave on the rim as a garnish.

Alternative Recipes

The Shogun – a long drink to take away some of the strength and smokiness.
Naked & Famous – if you have Aperol at home, a slightly more bitter take on All Betts Are Off.
Mezcal Margarita – if you have triple sec (e.g. cointreau). Honey or sugar can replace the agave syrup.
Sangre & Dulce – if you really know your stuff and have Fernet Branca!

If you don’t love the Mezcal, but have Gin:
The Last Word – replace Luxardo Marashino in this recipe with your Cartron Marasquin from the kit.
Mujer Verde – both colours of Chartreuse give your gin a really herbal kick
